Yesterday, July 24th, at 4:15 P.M. PST, the cast of The Vampire Diaries literally took Comic Con 2010 by its teeth (fangs?), during a 45-minute panel session. This kickass panel included:
(1) a insightful Q&A session with the shows stars, producers, and writers;
(2) a “sizzle reel” featuring the hottest moments from the show’s first season;
(3) a blooper reel, where the cast discovers the wonders of “gonorrhea” and Nina Dobrev falls on her bum in a fancy dress; and
(4) EXCLUSIVE scenes from the show’s Season 2 premiere, entitled “The Return,” which is set to air on the CW on Thursday, September 9th at 8 p.m.

AGAIN . . . I wasn’t there.
HOWEVER, thanks to a little help from my friends, most notably the ALWAYS AWESOME Amy over at imaginarymen (who seriously deserves an award for Fangirl Sleuthing Excellence), I’ve managed to gather quite a bit of fabulous intel about the event, including video clips and pictures galore!
But first: THE SWAG! To promote the upcoming season, the CW offered attendees of The Vampire Diaries panel, THIS:
How cool is that? Honestly, I would cut off the fingers on my right hand to get that bag (I’m a lefty, of course.)
On second thought . . . maybe not . . . Eww!
(Please, don’t take me up on that offer, Vampire Katherine.)
As if that bag wasn’t enough, patrons at the hotel where the conference was taking place, arrived at their respective rooms to find THIS on their door . . .
Adorable . . . but a bit misleading. Imagine getting a knock at your door, and THINKING it’s going to be the enchanting Ian Somerhalder, only to find out that its ACTUALLY a 300-pound maid named Rosa, bringing those extra towels you asked for. That would seriously BITE! (No pun intended).
Misleading or not, the door knocker provides some handy tips on how to view a sneak peek at The Vampire Diaries gag reel, which will be featured on the show’s Season 1 DVD. That DVD won’t be released on August 31, 2010, but it’s available now for pre-order. Fortunately, YOU don’t have to go through the trouble of going to the website and entering the code provided, because I have the video for you RIGHT HERE!
As for the ACTUAL panel event, it featured all of our favorite TVD stars! In attendance at Comic Con were . . . wait . . . Why would I TELL you, when I can SHOW you!

Then, when it was all over, fans were treated to exclusive clips from the Season 2 premiere episode, “The Return.” Notable scenes from the clip reel included . . .

(1) Vampire Katherine girlfighting with Witch Bonnie;
(2) Damon telling Stefan that he kissed Elena (complete with kissing noises to demonstrate how it all went down);
(3) Vampire Katherine making out with Damon and then telling him that SHE NEVER LOVED HIM;
(4) Vampire Katherine telling Stefan she came back FOR HIM;
(5) Stefan telling Vampire Katherine he HATES HER; and
(6) Vampire Katherine staking Stefan in the stomach.
Can you say, AWESOME!
Unfortunately, Amy and I were only able to find one video of this clip reel on YouTube. And this one is maddeningly “Shaky Cam”-tastic. For a second there, I thought I was watching Blair Witch Project or Paranormal Activity. But hey, it’s better than nothing, right?

As it turns out, this week’s issue of TV Guide is honoring the event with FOUR exclusive covers, featuring FOUR different “Comic Con”-ed shows, one of which is . . . wait for it . . . Isn’t the whole cast adorable? Every time I see the TVD cast in interviews, I am always impressed by how totally down to earth they are, and how much they genuinely seem to enjoy one another’s company. And they are REALLY funny too! Hot, smart, nice AND funny? There must be something in the water at Mystic Falls. Where can I get some?
I never watched Cane. So this is my first Michael Trevino experience. He looked really cute during the panel though, in his emo black glasses. 😉
I recently read an interview with Trevino, in which he humbly admitted that he tried out for both Stefan and Damon, before he got the role of Tyler. The casting directors told him he was not pretty enough to play Damon and not nice enough to play Stefan. Ouch, right? The fact that he was willing to share that embarrassing info with the public just made me like him more. I’m glad they are giving him more to do in Season 2.
Speaking of Emo . . . poor Jeremy. “Everyone I date ends up dead.” So true. I’m glad they didn’t kill the character off though, because Stephen R. McQueen is just too adorable to die. He’d be a kickass vampire though . . .
I like that you call her “Vampire Kat.” I may have to use that one . . . 😉
I know, on the surface, it seems like Katherine should be with Damon, and Stefan should be with Elena. But I kind of like this little twist the writers threw in there. It kind of makes sense that someone like Katherine would want precisely what she can’t have. I can’t wait to see where they go with this . . .
I liked when Ian cursed in the blooper reel too. I also enjoyed his hysterical laughter when Nina fell on her ass. Classic!

I raced for the computer once Comic Con was over because I knew you would have the most… hmm aesthetically pleasing breakdown of what happened!
By the way, the Damon/Vicki dance scene is my fave Vampire Diaries scene ever too. It is what got me hooked on the show, and is the scene I show friends who are wary about watching an ep. Ian Somerhalder’s abs usually convert them pretty quickly!

Hehe! You never know, I just might! I was actually an exchange student for six months in Saratoga, California way back in 2004 and have always wanted to visit my host family again. Next year’s Comic Con would just give me the perfect excuse to head over 🙂
Carol’s pics are better than kittens, sunshine, cherries and vervain (!) all rolled into one! BTW, I love the Hot Somerhalder folder idea. I should totally set one up at work (I’m in a pretty much all-female office) for an instant mood booster should the mood arise.
Seriously, it is so hard to choose between Paul and Ian that I think the imaginary ‘Defan’ Nina mentioned is the best bet… although if the fate of the free world or Mystic Falls depended on it, I would have to say that I am a Damon girl. I was almost motivated to learn how to play poker, since I think I should have been the ‘Cherie’ playing the game half-naked with Ian!!

This cast does seem to genuinely get along and have fun – and all seem thrilled by the success and impressed by the dedication of the fandom. That’s always nice to see.
While the video was bad quality, the scenes for the premiere were CRAZY GOOD! I am so happy they are keeping up the “Wham! Bam! Thank you Salvatore!” pace of S1.

Honestly, can you BLAME the videographer for nearly dropping the camera every time Damon came on screen? If I had been there, taping the footage, it would have been called DROOLY Cam, because . . . well, I guess that’s self explanatory, really . . .

Season Two looks totally epic!
I love that Nina’s Katherine is subtly, but completely different from her Elena. I was definitely tipped off in the finale even before the big reveal… I could tell something was off. I still loved the kiss though! I haven’t squeed like that since Veronica and Logan first kiss (favourite ship EVER) 🙂
I love the twist that Katherine is back for Stefan. My VD addicted friends have said that the moment that Elena hooks up with Damon she is damaged as a character because she is cheating with someone’s brother, but I wonder if STEFAN’s actions will drive Elena into Damon’s open-shirted waiting arms??
I so can’t wait for you guys to start your liveblogging dream team! Now I have some parting gifts for you guys to use… far be it for me to deprive you of more hot Somerhalder!

Woo hoo! It’s like Somerhalder-palooza in here! 🙂 Thank you, thank you, thank you, for bringing the “Sexy Back!” (I’m sure anyone else reading this now is thanking you too! ;)).
At Comic Con, Nina said that Elena and Katherine “look” different from one another. Katherine is a skinny jeans and high heels girl. Elena’s style is more casual and less trendy. Nina also seemed to be wearing more makeup in her “Katherine” scene during the finale. (Perhaps to hide her vampiric pallor? ;)) Their mannerisms are obviously different too. Way to go Nina, for getting the opportunity to really flex her acting chops this season!
I don’t think I caught on to it when I was actually watching the finale. But watching it again, you can really see the difference. Absolutely brilliant.
BTW, since you are an Aussie, maybe you have the inside scoop. There’s a rumor floating around the internet that Ian and Nina admitted to dating at OzCon this year. And that during interviews, Ian began to refer to his former squeeze Megan as “his ex.” I saw the rumor posted multiple places, but couldn’t find any actual footage or transcripts to back this up. Can you set me straight? 🙂

I am dying for someone to recap the trailer for the Tomorrow When The War Began movie, which is based on the first of a series of books by Aussie author John Marsden that started the closest thing that Oz has ever had to a Harry Potter or Twilight – like juggernaut.
I’m pretty sure you can get the books (cheaply) in the states and they are awesome on the level of VD’s awesomeness!

The Tomorrow series has a whole bunch of Aussie hotties in it, including some from the soap that gave True Blood’s Ryan Kwanten his start – Home and Away! So, they come from a pretty good pedigree!!!
I’m pretty sure it will be released in the US, albeit a limited release, sometime after the Aussie release, which is slated for 2 September over here. The second official trailer is here:

In the first 30 seconds or so, it looks like your typical Hot Dead Teenager Slasher movie. (With the group camping out, and the flirting, and the drinking/ partying, followed by the lost cell phone reception, and the fear, and the distrust). But then it seems to turn into this armageddon / War type film with intriguing and complex characters. Awesome!
Have you ever read The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins? Because this trailer reminded me a little of that, in its tone.
After you first mentioned this to me, I must have spent about 45 minutes, watching the trailers and researching the series. I also put the first book on my “To Read” list at Goodreads. Now I just have to find it . . . 😦
So, of course, I was totally bummed to see that it’s only being released in Australia and New Zealand, not the U.S. This doesn’t mean that U.S. folks won’t get to see it, they just might not get to see THIS version. I’ve noticed with popular international books made into movies like “Let the Right One In” and “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” the U.S. has a habit of remaking the films starring American actors, before putting them in wide release. (Ethnocentric of us, I know . . .)
So, I DEFINITELY want to write a post about the series. But what I may do, is wait until I’ve read the book. This way, I can post the trailer, discuss the book, AND do a “Create Your Dream Cast” sort of deal, with suggestions for actors who can star in the inevitable remake.
This way, readers in the U.S. won’t get pissed at me for getting them all jazzed about an awesome movie they might not get to see for a while . . . 🙂

Love, love the idea of the Create Your Own Dream Cast! And let me know if you have any troubles finding the books, because I could always post you my (well-loved, doggy-eared!) collection. The original book covers are definitely the best! Just curious: how do you embed trailers? Or is that something only you as the moderator can do?

You can embed them too, as a commenter! I learned this by accident, actually. With YouTube videos, if you paste the link to the video at the very end of your comment, on its own line, without anything else below it, the video will embed itself.
So, for example, you put the link to the Tomorrow trailer on the same line as the rest of your text (after a colon). However, it WAS at the end of your comment. Therefore, all I had to do to get it to embed was edit your comment, so that the link to the trailer appeared on a line by itself.
It’s a pretty great feature, I think! 🙂
Ohh, almost forgot to mention something!
In lieu of doing Tomorrow, another cool Aussie film that is definitely on DVD in America is Daybreakers, by the Spierig brothers. It takes a more dystopian view of vampirism than TVD or True Blood, but is really creative in its approach and features a grizzled but still pretty hot (IMO :)) Ethan Hawke! Curious to see if you have seen it, and what you thought… 🙂
I remember really wanting to see Daybreakers when it first came out, but I just never got around to it. I’ll definitely have to rent it soon! 🙂
I LOVE Ethan Hawke. One of my favorite Ethan Hawke movies is Gattaca, which also stars Jude Law and Uma Thurman. It’s a bit old (1997), but definitely withstands the test of time. I didn’t discover it until a few years after it came out in theaters, but I absolutely adored it, once I did. If you are curious, you can find out a bit more about it, here:

Though no exact premiere date has been set yet, The Vampire Diaries Season 3 is set to premiere this Fall 2011. If past seasons are any indication, the premiere date should be some time in early September.
