GO IAN! It’s your birthday! – A (Small) Tribute to Ian Somerhalder on his 32nd Birthday

It’s Ian Somerhalder’s birthday.  So let’s CELEBRATE!  First, change into something a little more comfortable . . .

Make sure you’ve got your favorite tunes playing . . .

You are DEFINITELY going to want to DANCE!

Pour yourself a drink . . . or twenty!

And don’t worry about those pesky calories.  INDULGE YOURSELF!

Put your feet up, and relax . . .

And don’t forget to pucker up for those birthday kisses!

Who knows?  You may even end up getting LAID!

You may have noticed that I spend a lot of time on this blog going on (and on . . . and on) about Ian Somerhalder – the actor.  I’ll write posts about the various roles he’s played, throughout his career, or his acting techniques, or the deft with which he’s established himself as a complex and intriguing male romantic lead.  Yet, through all of this, I very rarely take the opportunity to talk about Ian Somerhalder – The Man.

Well, now “The Man” has just turned 32.  So, what better time than NOW, to peek into Ian Somerhalder’s life:  where he has been, and, perhaps, even more importantly, where is he GOING . . .

Ian Somerhalder was born December 8, 1978 in Covington, Louisianna.  His gregarious nature, and natural good looks led him to begin a career in modeling at a very early age . . .

But, at the age of 17, Ian found himself craving something more.  And so, he began to pursue a career in acting.

Though Ian made a name for himself playing roles like the bisexual schemer Paul Denton in the film The Rules of Attraction, and sexually confused private school student Hamilton Fleming, in the short-lived television series, Young Americans, his big break came in 2004, when he auditioned for the role of Boone Carlye, in what would become ABC’s most successful television series, Lost.

But then the writers had to go and kill off his character, during the show’s first season.  (Yeah . . . THAT SUCKED!)

So, Ian took his talents to the stage, starring as a teenaged version of Pig Pen in the Off-Broadway Peanuts tribute play, Dog Sees God, alongside other up-and-coming actors, America Ferrara (Ugly Betty, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants), Eliza Dushku (Bring it On, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dollhouse), Ari Graynor (Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist), Logan Marshall Green (The O.C.), and Eddie Kaye Thomas (American Pie).

(Believe it or not, I actually got to see this show live.  I loved it to pieces.)

And . . .  then came The Vampire Diaries, and a little Brooding Bad Boy Bloodsucker, we like to call Damon Salvatore . . .

The show was an instant success, and quickly built up a rabid fanbase.  This can largely be attributed (in addition to great writing) to the stellar acting skills and amazing chemistry of its talented cast members . . .

The success of The Vampire Diaries helped Ian gain recognition both as Entertainment Weekly’s Sexy Beast, and as one of People Magazine’s Sexiest Men Alive in 2010.

But Ian is more than a pretty face, talented actor, and charming interviewee, he’s also a pretty darn good person, who cares about the environment and wants to better his community.  A staunch animal lover, and owner of three cats . . .

. . . Ian has worked closely with the St. Tammany Humane Society to raise money for animals in need.  His involvement in this organization increased manyfold, following the Gulf Oil Spill, back in April of 2010.  Ian was one of the first celebrities to speak out publicly against BP, and the lackadasical way in which the spill was being handled by its executives.  Concerned about the welfare of the animals living in the gulf, Ian put out a series of public service announcements requesting public donations to help care for them.

In fact, Ian was one of the main voices behind the Gulf Oil Spill Telethon hosted by Larry King this year.

Today, in honor of his 32nd birthday, Ian will launch his own foundation geared toward positively impacting the planet and its creatures.  You can learn more about the Ian Somerhalder foundation (and how to make a donation) by clicking here.  To learn more about what’s going on in the Fabulous Life of Ian Somerhalder, go ahead and follow him on Twitter.

But, however, you decide to celebrate Ian’s birthday, be sure to watch The Vampire Diaries this Thursday at 8 p.m . . .

I promise you, it won’t SUCK . . .

Happy Birthday, Ian.  YOU’RE THE MAN! 🙂

AWESOME POST. I vote you do more posts like this. In fact, I vote you just abandon TV recapping altogether. I would so read this blog ALL THE TIME. YOU MUST FIND OUT WHEN ALEXANDER SKARSGARD’S BIRTHDAY IS. I am officially looking forward to that post. YAY FOR RANDOM PICTURES OF HOT MEN (I didn’t *read* the entire post, per say, but those photographs were some of your best work). Seriously, if you do one of these of Alexander Skarsgard it will be my official favorite blog post OF ALL TIME. OF ALL TIME. Sorry, I’m cramming for my math final and I’m majorly sleep deprived, and when I get sleep deprived I get a little extreme/insane. Seriously though, that post would be LEGEN- wait for it . . . -DARY. Okay, maybe not legendary, but pretty cool. I would read it. Or at least look at the pictures. But probably read it too. Maybe. Depending on how many pictures and how good they were. You’re a good writer, but Alexander Skarsgard is hot. Seriously. Hot. And I’m really sleep deprived, which makes everything much more extreme in my mind (seriously, I haven’t slept in almost forty-two hours). And Alexander Skarsgard, any hotter than he is in real life, is just too hot. My sleep deprived brain does not comprehend.
I forgot why I started this comment. I have been distracted. I think the gist of it was YOU ARE AWESOME. MORE POSTS WITH HOT MEN. PREFERABLY ALEXANDER SKARSGARD. CRAP, I’M OFF SUBJECT AGAIN. YOU ARE AWESOME AND MORE PICTURES OF HOT MEN PREFERABLY ALEXANDER SKARSGARD CAUSE HE’S HOT CRAP I’M OFF SUBJECT AGAIN GOODNIGHT TO YOU.
(Please ignore the above comment. No one should ever communicate with the outside world after more than forty hours of sleep deprivation.)

    • Hey Madeline! Thanks for the post kudos. (By the way, should I be a bit offended that you like best the posts where I write the least? ;)) It’s OK, Ian and Alex faces and bodies are hotter than my words are. Even I can admit that.

By the way, ASkarz birthday is August 25th, which means I missed it this year. 😦 But I definitely plan to do a post like this for him next year. And hey, by that time, True Blood will be back on, and we will be seeing your boyfriend on a regular basis, both on TV and on this blog. 🙂

Something to look forward to . . .

Yay! Cannot wait. I really hope an episode falls on August 4th (my birthday). If only ASkars’s birthday were 21 days sooner, then I could read that post ON MY BIRTHDAY. That would be awesome. And I am crying a little (okay, not really. I don’t care THAT much) that you missed his birthday this year.
And, just FYI, your words are very clever, and snarky, and there’s lots of sarcasm (one of my favorite things in the whole world, sarcasm, not your words. Sorry.) so while your words may not surpass the hotness of Ian or ASkars, here’s a list of the actors they do surpass.
-Hugh Jackman. Okay, that was easy. I just don’t see the appeal. He looks like a lumberjack. And not the hot kind, which leads me to the next name.
-That Guy Who Plays Alcide. Yes, he’s hot (much more so than Hugh Jackman) however, I do not see all the fuss everyone’s making. He is not hot enough for me to look up his name. If you did one of these posts about him, while I would make a point to look at the pictures, I would read it. The whole thing.
        -Whomever Plays Chuck Bass. Sorry.
-All of the Men From House Except Jesse Spencer. You watch Gray’s Anatomy. Seriously. I normally agree with you, but, seriously?? I’ve seen, nay, *enjoyed* more episodes of *Sesame Street* than Gray’s Anatomy.
There are more (probably over three billion more) but I think I you get the picture, which if I think about it too much is kind of creepy.

      • Well I may not have remembered ASkars birthday this past year, but People Magazine sure did! Celebrate it belatedly, by copying and pasting this link to your browser:

Not bad, huh? And, while I agree Grey’s Anatomy isn’t quite the show it was Season 1, have you SEEN Jesse Williams? That boy’s eyes and abs alone are worth the price of admission (Guess I better check out when his birthday is too . . . ;)).

Oh, and BTW, your birthday falls out on a Thursday in 2011. Not quite TB Sunday episode time, but very very close . . . 🙂

    TY for puttin this together–awesome!

    • Hey mak75321! Thanks so much for stopping by and for your kind words. I’m so glad you enjoyed the post! Ian gives me so much joy on a daily basis. And SO many people find this blog by searching for pictures / intel on him, I feel like it’s the least I can do!

    I LOVE THIS!!! 😀

  5. awesome post! totally totally loved it !!

  6. I didn’t think I could love Ian more… until I discovered he is a cat lover like us!

Is Piglet now Team Damon like Tootsie is?

I love any post you do, but what is great about these particular posts is that they are a collection of OhSoHot images in one handy little location I can bookmark and return to whenever the need arises. My Hot Somerhalder folder thanks you muchly 🙂

    • Piglet is totally Team Damon! In fact, the day Ian was on Jimmy Kimmel, I took a break from blogging to watch. The moment he came on the screen, guess who was in my lap, staring attentively at the television screen? 🙂 NO JOKE!

You’re very welcome, Cherie’s Hot Somerhalder folder! 🙂 So many pretty Ian pics, so little time . . . The only hard thing about writing this post was choosing WHICH pictures and interviews to include. The sheer awesomeness was almost too much for this little blogger to handle. (But I soldiered through. ;))
